This is a portrait of Morag in indian ink.
Working in ink is so different to working with pastels. It’s more unpredictable and unforgiving, producing instantaneous but permanent results. And I love it for those reasons. I’m probably a “tonalist” at heart, attracted to scenes with strong contrasts and black and white images.
These monochromatic portraits were competed a few years ago now, but remain personal favourites and have proved popular reproduced on greeting cards.
More recently I have done some slightly larger studies – experimenting with drips and textures. I’ve even tried taking my inks outside but seem to manage to cover myself in ink too !
A new series of small sheep portraits drawn in ink will be available in my new online shop.
